The Living History Farms Off Road Race

Amber, Me, Emily and Greg before the race.  We knew this would be the only shot of the 4 of us together.

The starting line up!

My parents came to see us off and welcome us back.  I can't believe my Dad actually found us on the course.

By off-road, they literally mean off-road.  It was CRAZY.  There were 8 creek crossings.  This was the last one and VERY mild compared to others we had crossed.  Amber and I are standing in the creek on the far side.  She has a bright blue shirt on and I am just in front of her.

Here we are at the finish of the race.  We had to finish it running.

This race was 7.1 miles of off-road hills and creeks, tunnels and fields, lots and lots of people, and two very scared deer trying to get away from it all.  At mile 5, we said we would do it again.  At mile 6 my left calf was cramping.  At mile 7, I wasn't so sure it was going to make it.  But we did it!  I didn't train at all for this, and really regret it.  I will do it again next year, but will definitly train.  Thanks Amber for staying with me.  I'm so proud if us.

All Things Paige

Today I was leaving a message on my cousin's answering machine. I told her that I called to catch up and we could chat later. When I got off the phone Paige said, "Mom, mustard, too. Call her and tell her ketchup and mustard." When I said 'catch up', Paige thought I was talking about 'ketchup'. Hilarious!

Introducing. . .

My nephew, Skylar Michael
Born November 14, 2009
8lbs and 20in long

He is Mark's brother's first baby. . .

and my girls' first cousin.  We are so excited and he is such a good baby.  He slept the entire time they were there, except when they woke him up to feed him.  Amazing!  (And he already has more hair than Alaina!)

Am I doing the right thing?

UPDATE:
Thank you for all your advice.  It was so encouraging and means a lot to us.  We have started the bedtime routine earlier and are using some of the other strategies that were mentioned.  She is still very difficult to put to bed, but is starting to fall asleep easier and faster than before.  Thanks for your continued support and prayers for Paige and Mark and I.

I know you are all probably sick of hearing my Paige troubles.  You have troubles of your own, but I truly cherish the wisdom of friends and right now, I don't know what to do.  We have been having trouble putting Paige to bed for a while now.  She won't stay in her room and does naughty things when she is supposed to be sleeping.  We've tried all kinds of consequences and nothing really seems to curb the behavior.

At first, I thought it was because she had been taking naps and just wasn't tired.  So, she doesn't take naps anymore, but still, the nighttime routine lasts for HOURS.  Here's the low down.  We start getting her ready for bed around 8pm.  We go to the bathroom, brush teeth, get jammies on, read, pray, and sing.  Then, the meltdown begins.  She started crying hysterically when we try to leave the room.  I mean, literal screams, and general hysteria.  Awhile back, we put Casey(our dog) in the room with her, so she wouldn't feel "alone".  It seemed to help for a time, but now nothing consoles her.  If we go into her room she latches onto our necks so tight, and won't let go.  It really is heartbreaking!  We use a fan for noise, and we've tried with and without the nightlight (with works better).  Last night, I tried putting music on for her, and she cried that it was too loud and hurt her ears.  (It was NOT loud and could barely be heard over the fan.)  She carries on for hours.

I've considered moving Alaina into her room in hopes that she will understand that she has to be quiet and stay in her bed so Alaina can sleep.  We tried it tonight with Alaina in the pack and play.  Paige still left the room and cried when we left.  We ended up taking Alaina out.  Alaina's such a good sleeper that we don't want to ruin her.  Paige was even more hysterical when Alaina went back to her own room.  I tried to explain to her why and that if she could show us that she could be quiet and stay in her bed, then we would try it again tomorrow night.

Tonight Mark and I said good night and didn't go downstairs.  Instead, we sat on the stairs where she couldn't see us, so we would know exactly what was happening.  Paige was hysterical and came out into the hall and cried there for about 20 minutes.  After a half hour she finally gave up and was in her bed and quiet.  She did wake up crying an hour later, but was consoled after about 5 minutes.  I actually feel good about this.  We'll try it again tomorrow night and see what happens.

My other dillemma, is that she wakes up at least once, usually twice or three times, just crying uncontrollably in the night.  I can't ever get her to tell me what's the matter and after a couple minutes of talking to her or singing to her, she calms down and falls back to sleep.  Every now and again before we put her to bed she mentions scary shadows.  What?!

Does anyone have any similar experience with kids?  What did you do?  Am I doing the right thing?  Is there anything else I can try?  I just don't want to force her to stay in her room by herself if she really is scared, but how do you deal with that?  Please pray for wisdom for Mark and I, but also for Paige and whatever it is that she is going through.

All Things Paige

"I'm calling Nana on my nana!" This is what Paige told Daddy she was doing while holding her banana up to her ear.

A Paige Update

I feel like I owe everyone an update on how we are doing with our darling Paige.  I'd like to report that all is well and we have had no other issues.  Sorry, that is not the case.  It seems everyday there is something, but I am learning how to handle it and it just doesn't seem as astromical as it once felt.  We are adjusting naps. . .basically, she isn't taking them anymore, and working on making good choices.  It's a slow process, but I'm trying to be consistent and I know that, this too shall pass.  I don't want to be naive, but I truly feel that at times, she really doesn't know that she is doing naughty things.  She is curious about different things, so we are really working at knowing what is ok to play with, and what things are off limits.  Keep praying for us, it feels like she is never going to get it.  We'll keep you posted.  Hopefully we'll get some new pics on here soon.

Oh Paige!!! Part 3

So, I seriously am at a loss with this girl.  This morning she was alone for 5 minutes upstairs while I was with Alaina in the basement.  In that 5 minutes, she managed to COVER the bottom half of a wall in our breakfast nook with spray suncreen.  It was dripping onto the wood floor through the woodwork.  It was over the outlets (which thankfully had child covers on them), over the light switches, literally everywhere.

And, no kidding, as I was typing the previous paragraph, Paige brought me her underwear.  That she had just peed in. . .on the carpet.  Are you kidding me?  I'm going to lose my mind with this child.  She is sitting in timeout as I type this, until I cool down.  Hopefully, there will not be a Part 4!

Oh Paige!!! Part 2

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this girl.  Today I found her, once again during naptime, in Alaina's crib.  Both girls totally naked.  Paige was putting sunscreen on Alaina and had unravelled a roll of toilet paper all over the room.  When I walked in she cried, "We're nakey, we're nakey!"

Then, when we were putting the girls to bed tonight.  I was reading to Paige while Mark put Alaina down.  He came into the room and asked why Alaina's bed was wet.  My first thought was that Alaina peed in it this afternoon, but immediately, Paige said, "I did it, I did it."  I asked her how she got it wet.  Her reply was, "with my butt!"  Seriously?!  She peed in Alaina's crib.

What do you do?!  She does get disciplined EVERY time and she doesn't seem to care.  Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get Paige to have a quiet time everyday without disturbing everything she can get her hands on?  I'm not so much wanting to put her in front of the TV and I really don't care if she sleeps.  I just need her to stay in her room and play quietly for a while.

Oh Paige!!!

My darling daughter capped off a not-so-fabulous Friday by getting into my brand new mascara and using it.  At least she knew where it was supposed to go.  This girl just about made me lose my mind Friday.  All I wanted to do was get some laundry done, take a shower, and make a meal for some friends.  All she wanted to do was get into Flash cards that were in a room that is off limits, rip the boxes, and scatter them throughout the living room.  Wake Alaina up not once, but twice during her nap by going into her bedroom, turning on the light, and crawling into her crib with her.  And wrapping up the day getting into my mascara.  And that was just what Paige did.  It was a doozy of a day that I'm glad I got to capture on film.

(And did I mention she cut her own bangs.  Aren't they cute?!

All Things Paige

One of my favorite things that Paige says to me is, "Mommy Beth, what did you do?" Usually she says this after I'm done cooking, before I've started cleaning up or when I'm sorting/folding laundry. It just cracks me up that she uses Beth (which is incorrect) as my middle name.

Family Pics

(Yes, we did take these ourselves! Well, Mark did, but getting them to pose and smile is also a big job!  There are many more, but these are my favorites.  And Alaina darling-someday you WILL have hair!)

Happy Halloween 2009!

This is how Trick-or-Treating started out for us. . .Alaina freaking because she wanted all our candy, which we were not smart enough to keep hidden until we were done with pictures.  So we tried to remove it after she saw it and that was it. . .total breakdown!

Paige was a charming kangaroo!

Here they are at their first house.  Alaina quickly snapped out of it after that.  It's AMAZING how fast they learn what to do.

We stopped at our friends' house and Brandon got to give them candy.

Alaina tried to hard to say "trick or treat", and always said thank you.

Here with my much happier chicken and little kangaroo!  Paige got cold and tired, so we didn't go far.  But thats alright, we still got a TON of candy!
